Light Islands
Tokamachi City, Japan.
2000

Area: 60’ W x 320’ L. Fiberglass tubes of varying heights, 4’ - 22’ H. Six oval concrete islands form a "stage" representing the six municipalities of Echigo-Tsumari. Within each island a thicket of tinted fiberglass tubes of various sizes, is illuminated by interior fiber-optics. At night the tubes transform into lanterns. As winter snow covers the islands, tinted shadows play on the white surface. As snow rises, one sees only the colored shafts of light piercing the drifts in pools of color.
